Dover Beach & My Last Duches Essays - Dover Beach, My Last Duchess

Dover Beach & My Last Duches Essays - Dover Beach, My Last Duchess Dover Beach & My Last Duches Setting in Dover Beach & My Last Duches Intro to Literature Paper II . My analysis of the setting in My Last Duchess and Dover Beach At first glance the setting of a poem is the psychological and physiological environment in which the story takes place. In some instances, the setting is used to develop the characters. Robert Browning and Matthew Arnold use the setting to expose their character traits. My Last Duchess and Dover Beach, respectively, portray the weaknesses of the characters using elements from the setting. The text, page 629 and 630, tells us that the setting in My Last Duchess displays a valuable art form that exposes his greed and cruelty. Dover Beach demonstrates changeability and impermanence. The speakers solution is to establish personal fidelity as a fixture against change, dissolution, and brutality. Even though the text tells us the main use of setting in these two poems, I believe that many individual words used in the poems help describe the surroundings and the feelings that the speaker is trying to get across. Robert Browning, the author of My Last Duchess, uses the setting to show the Dukes greed, cruelty, and jealousy. The development of the setting begins with the Duke showing an agent for the Count of Tyrol the curtained picture of his deceased Duchess. Count of Troy sent an agent in order to see if the Duke is worthy to marry his daughter. The fact that he keeps the picture behind closed curtains and deems it a privilege to view the Dukes last Duchess illustrates his possessiveness and greed. She thanked mengood! But thanked somehowI know not howas if she ranked my gift of nine-hundred-years-old name with anybodys gift. This line lends to the setting by showing his greed and how he places himself above other men according to his possessions and can not believe that she had the audacity to place the Duke in the same category as other men. The physical setting of this poem is revealed by phrases such as Thats my Duchess painted on the wall and words like curtains and Duke. Duke itself makes one think of a beautiful castle with priceless furniture and art work. The use of curtains to cover up the Duchess picture implies that the Duke is hiding something. The phrase mentioned above informs all that the Dukes past wife is dead and that by putting her picture on the wall shows the love and devotion that he had for her and will have for his future wife. Where the words of the Duke imply that he shows dedication and warm heart for the Duchess the setting reveals the true character of the Duke. Dover Beach is a poem written by Matthew Arnold and was first published in 1849. The physical setting is described as a moon lit night by a calm sea. In the distant background the speaker describes the cliffs of England as he looks across a tranquil bay. The author is setting up a romantic scene for two people in love. The waves give both a mental and physical setting for the poem. Listen! You hear the grating roar of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling, at their return, up the high strand, begin, and cease, and then again begin, with tremulous cadence slow, and bring the eternal note of sadness in. Here, Arnold begins using the setting to describe the characters and their traits. The phrase begin, and cease, and then again begin is indicative of the characters changing state of mind; to like then dislike, to love then hate then love again. The use of ebb, flow, and misery makes the night and the relationship between the lovers appears dark and chaotic. Through his depiction of the eroding shores of the earth, Arnold describes the constant changes in the relationship and the continuous changes of their feelings towards each other. Lines 20 and 21, the Sea of Faith, was once, too, at the full, and round earths shore, describe the erosion of not only the land but the relationship of the couple, too. The wind, waves, and sounds that you hear along the beach, obviously the physical aspects of the setting represent the emotional ties of the lovers. The speakers description of a land of dreams having, neither joy, nor love, nor light, nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain: is one were the relationship has nothing hidden and the roar of the waves on the beach

Enterprise Systems Case Study Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Enterprise Systems Case Study Analysis - Essay Example For example, an organization has a number of departments include: sales & marketing, procurement & inventory, finance & accounting and human resources. In order to automate the organization develops independent or separate information system for each department and these individual systems might not be integrated because of incompatibility. Therefore, the information or data available in one system might not be accessible to the other independent information system. In this regards, it can be stated that the organization could not be benefited from the main purpose/advantages of the information systems including the information must be shared easily, correctly, and on time among business units. Disparate Independent Systems – High Maintenance Cost Problem The second problem of disparate information that has been identified in the paper is the huge cost of their maintenance. There are two types of maintenance costs, the first is the direct maintenance costs and the other is ind irect maintenance costs. ... nformation or communication flow problem in the independent information systems, the organization’s management has to bear indirect costs by taking wrong decisions by their own instinct rather than the decisions based on the information / reports provided by the group of independent information systems. Precisely, it can be stated that if an organization has the fragmented or autonomous information systems, the operations of the organization is fragmented (Davenport, 1998). Identification of Two Issues in each Organization in China Implementing ERP CosmeticCo Company There are total five (5) problems have been identified in the case study for implementation of ERP in CosmeticCo company by Sweden’s Intentia AB – the software package provider (ERP vendor). The five problems include: the language, Business Process Reengineering (BPR), Partnership, human resource, report and table. From these I have chosen the language, and report and table problems and it is pertine nt to mention here that according to the authors of the paper, both chosen problems are categorized as cultural problems. Language In the words of Davison in 2002, the culture is â€Å"A collective programming of the mind which distinguishes one group from another†. Particularly the Chinese are strict to their language and the only way to make the Chinese understand is to write in their own language rather than the Western language. However, the MOVEX ERP software did contain English words by which the human resources got confused and unable to use the software effectively. The Davison identified three cultural reasons of failure in ERP in China from which one is â€Å"miscommunication due to homonyms in the Chinese language†. It is one of the important factors to be considered while deployment of software

Article Review - Essay Example The American culture and traditions condone how vulnerable youths become to drug abuse. It is important to note that the health problem has been quite around for a very long time (OWN, 2014). Unfortunately for drug us, it affects a lot of people as they engage in it during their youth, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA*) states that at least 9 out of 10 who are said to be addicts started drinking, smoking, or using any other drug before they reach 18 (CASA Columbia, 2011). Drug abuse has had profound effects on the society. CASA maintains that teen drinking, smoking, and overall drug abuse has been very damaging to millions of people in the community and that there have been costly long range consequences. America reports homicides, increased general crimes due to drug use and abuse. Teen drug abuse remains the most expensive yet preventable health issue for the community. The American community has implemented measures to ensure that teen drug abuse is dealt with. Educating the youth on detrimental effects of drug addiction can be, conducting routine screening, and provision of appropriate treatment to the affected are among the many ways that have proven useful in combating drug abuse (Estep, 2013). Online Requisition Essay Introduction In the world of business, Information system is such where data are collected, classified and put into process interpreting the result thereon in order to provide an integrated series of information for further communicating and analyzing. In a progressively more spirited worldwide atmosphere, Information System plays the role as enabler and facilitator, which endows with tactical values to the officialdom and considerable step up to the excellence of administration. An Information System is a particular type of work system that uses information technology to detain, put on the air, store, retrieve, manipulate or display information. Information system enables companies to react, respond, cater, store, retrieve, disseminate, and control their new valuable asset that is information. In the years to come, a good information system within a company will be no longer an option; it will become a compulsory in determining success. Upgrading the computer information system is not an option in this technology-driven era; it is a requirement. Companies that use an up-to-date information system to gather, assimilate, and evaluate internal as well as external information are gaining competitive advantage over other firms. Citizen Action and Policy Process: The Case of Disney’s America and Pri

Citizen Action and Policy Process: The Case of Disney’s America and Prince William County, Virginia Introduction Regardless of point-of-view, the events surrounding Disney’s America theme-park provide compelling lessons to policy makers, business interests and citizen activist groups. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Disney’s America controversy through the lens of public policy process. I first analyze the core issues of the case. Second, I identify predominant actors and stakeholders. Third, I point out policy instruments and processes germane to the case. Finally, I discuss the outcome and lessons to be gleaned from the case. Issues Haymarket, a community with a population of 375, is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Washington D.C., in Prince William County, Virginia. It is situated in an area characterized by farmland in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Nearby is a Civil War battlefield site, now a National Battlefield Park administered by the National Park Service, where 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died during two battles fought at Bull Run: the first land battle of the Civil War in 1861, and in 1862, when Robert E. Lee defeated Union forces as he led the Confederate toward the Potomac River. In the early 1990s, Chairman Michael Eisner of Disney, envisioned an American history theme-park to be called Disney’s America. Colonial Williamsburg in southeastern Virginia initially provided inspiration for Disney executives. Childhood Is The Best Part Of One’s Life Narrate Your Experience

Many a time, I have longed for my childhood days. This is especially true at times when I would like to escape from the torture of examinations and homework. Furthermore, my childhood was filled with countless memorable moments that I would love to relive. Many, who have happy childhood memories, would also, I am sure, feel the same.Childhood is a period which is associated with fun and play. The child hardly cares or knows what the adult thinks of him. He frolics with his childhood playmates in the sand, mud or water. Through his mother may chide him for his pranks, she may, secretly in her heart, wish that she too could be as carefree and happy as her child.Children normally do not have any major responsibilities to shoulder. Political, economic, social and family problems do not disturb them. They may be confused because they can not comprehend the problem, but most of them will not go through heartbreaking moments over them. However, the above beautifully painted childhood phase i s not true in the case of all children. There are children who are abused and exploited and who suffer from dire poverty. In Ethiopia and other poor countries, children are afflicted with many diseases and continually suffer the pangs of hunger. They have to shoulder the responsibilities of adults, looking for food and taking care of their younger siblings. These cases, however, may be considered as exceptions. Many still feel that the average child’s life is much merrier. Adult life is filled with responsibilities. Yet, responsibilities need not be viewed negatively. There are many joys that come with responsibilities. For example, I always experience great joy and satisfaction when I do well in my exam after studying hard for it.Therefore, in my view, childhood can be looked back upon as one of the best periods in one’s life. With a positive attitude, a person can experience happiness in any period of his life.

The global warming

Global Heating: A Man-made ProblemMany old ages in the yesteryear there was contention over whether planetary heating was genuinely happening. Over this period many different scientists have done many trials and experiments which have proven that planetary heating is a fact non a theory. Now that planetary heating has been proven true, there is a argument over whether it is caused by natural happenings or semisynthetic patterns. In the docudrama, Inconvenient Truth wrote by former Vice president Al Gore, it explains and provides grounds that planetary heating is a semisynthetic job. Harmonizing to Fred Singer ‘s and Dennis Avery ‘s book, Unstoppable Global Warming, planetary heating and chilling seem to be portion of a 1,500-year rhythm of moderate temperature swings and human activities are non the primary cause of planetary heating. Although some think that Global heating is merely a portion of the Earth ‘s natural rhythm, I agree with Al Gore, that planetary heat ing is caused by worlds ‘ actions for several grounds: 1 ) We use many of the Earth ‘s resources really heedlessly and inefficiently. 2 ) Our abuse of fossil fuels emits dozenss of C dioxide in the air doing dire alterations around the universe. 3 ) The increasing population of the universe makes the earth work harder than it should to keep all of the people in it. One indispensable ground why I think planetary heating is a semisynthetic job is because people use the Earth ‘s natural resources prodigally. For illustration, when we burn and cut down woods for paper, wood or to do room for people to populate, we are lending to planetary heating. Harmonizing to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, trees absorb C dioxide from the air, which is one of the nursery gases that are absorbed by the ambiance. By taking the trees away the C dioxide that could hold been absorbed by the trees will merely travel into the ambiance ( USEPA ) . When C dioxide or other nursery gases get absorbed by the ambiance they trap heat in the lower ambiance that goes back down to the Earth. When there is big sum of the nursery gases in the ambiance it can do excess warming of the Earth ( Inconvenient ) . Another natural resource that we take advantage of is our dirt. When we have our refuse taken to elephantine landfills we are making more injury to our planet than we know. Harmonizing to Brian Ladd, a member of Eco-Cycle ‘s Community Action Team, when waste under the land starts disintegrating it do methane gas to ooze to the surface and enters the lower ambiance. Methane is a powerful nursery gas that is twenty one times more effectual at pin downing radiant heat than C dioxide ( Ladd ) . We need to take a good expression at how efficaciously we are utilizing natural resources because we are utilizing them faster than nature can bring forth them. Beside the natural resources above, there is one resource that we use wholly irresponsibly. That resource is fossil fuels, which are the primary subscribers to planetary heating. Fossil fuels are made of organic affair such as coal or oil. We burn fossil fuels everyday when we drive our autos, and create electricity in our places. When you burn fossil fuels it releases C dioxide. Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, in 650,000 old ages the C dioxide degree had ne'er gone supra 300 parts per million. Harmonizing to Anne Waple, the Communications Manager at the Climate Change Science Program Office, Today, degrees are greater than 380 ppm and increasing at a rate of 1.9 ppm yr-1 since 2000 ( Waple ) . The IPCC Special Report on Emission Scenario stated that by the terminal of the twenty-first century, we could anticipate to see CO2 degrees between 490 to 1260 ppm ( Waple ) . These high degrees of C dioxide cause the thaw of glaciers around the universe. For illustration, the Himalaya â⠂¬Ëœs Glaciers provide imbibing H2O for 40 per centum of the people on Earth ( Inconvenient ) . If the glaciers keep runing at such a rapid rate there will be a deficit of H2O. Since more glaciers everyplace are runing off it will do the sea degrees to lift. ( Inconvenient ) Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, if Greenland melted topographic points such Florida, San Francisco Bay, and Manhattan would be submerged. The authorities needs to take planetary warming more earnestly because if this happened it would be to lay waste toing. Though burning fossil fuels is the primary cause of planetary heating, population would merely do the effects of planetary heating greater. Do n't you believe if we have excessively many people on Earth we will make excessively much pollution for the Earth to manage? This is why population has become a factor in planetary heating. For blink of an eyes, more people means extra usage of transit, which causes the combustion of more fossil fuels. Larger populations besides mean a larger demand for H2O. There will besides be a bigger demand for nutrient ( Inconvenient ) . Most people in the universe are meat feeders which means we have to engender more cattles. Harmonizing to the Children ‘s British Broadcasting Company, cattles are a beginning of nutrient, and their flatuss and manure contains methane. â€Å"Just one cow gives off adequate harmful methane gas in a individual twenty-four hours to make full around 400 litre bottles, which is truly bad for the environment† ( CB BC ) . To keep all the people in the universe we have to go on doing room for people to populate. One manner we do this is by cutting and firing down woods. Thirty per centum of the C dioxide that goes up into the ambiance comes from forest combustion ( Waple ) . If we keep interfering with nature ‘s rhythms at that place might non be any rhythms to mess up after a piece. Even with all the grounds above Fred Singer and Dennis Avery believe that we have nil to make with the cause of planetary heating. They think that, â€Å"human-emitted CO2 ( C dioxide ) has played merely a minor function in it. Alternatively, the mild warming seems to be portion of a natural 1,500-year clime rhythm ( plus or minus 500 old ages ) that goes back at least one million years† ( Singer and Avery pg. 3 ) . In their book, they stated that ice nucleuss from Greenland and Antarctic ‘s Vostok Glacier showed the same 1,500-year rhythms ( Singer and Avery ) . Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, it is true that there was a mediaeval heating period and two others. If you were to compare the mediaeval heating period CO2 degrees with those of the other two, you would see that they fit closely together ( Inconvenient ) . If you were to compare today ‘s C dioxide degrees to the predating warming period ‘s degrees, you would see that our degrees are off the chart s ( Inconvenient ) . So what happened between so and now? It is obvious that we have done something to do the CO2 degrees so much higher than the old heating periods. Harmonizing to Emily Robinson, a imperativeness secretary at Union of Concerned Scientists, another thing that you should take in consideration is that Fred Singer is â€Å"affiliated† with no less than 11 â€Å"think tanks† and â€Å"associations† that have received support from ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil is the universe ‘s largest publically traded international oil and gas company. Singer ‘s ain â€Å"Science and Environmental Policy Project† ( SEPP ) has received $ 20,000 from ExxonMobil ( Robinson ) . Dennis Avery is a â€Å"Senior Fellow† for a â€Å"think tank† called the Hudson Institute. The Hudson Institute received $ 25,000 from ExxonMobil ( Robinson ) . It sounds to me like they are covering for ExxonMobil. Do you believe they are seeking to protect ExxonMob il to maintain the money coming in? Nice defense. More people need to look at all the grounds that proves we have contributed to the cause of planetary heating. We need to acknowledge that we are doing planetary heating by utilizing the Earth ‘s natural resources recklessly, breathing immense sums of carbon dioxide into the ambiance by firing fossil fuels, and seting force per unit area on the Earth and it resources by over populating. Although there has been other warming periods before our clip, today ‘s CO2 degrees are beyond comparing with old warming periods. The authorities should halt debating over what caused it and set some Torahs into consequence. There would be no injury in puting Torahs to assist the Earth. All it could make is assist the United States become a better topographic point to populate.Work CitedInconvenient Truth. Prod. Laurie David, et Al. Dir. Davis Guggenheim. Perf. Al Gore. Modernism

Modernism In Miller's Death of a salesman the theme of individual powerlessness is re-occurring. The entire play is based on the life of a man who has basically failed at everything he has done. All this bad fortune is not just Willy Loman's fault, he has to face the cruel reality for the world and try to cope with it. Unfortunately Willy fails at his attempt of coping with the real world. The theme of individual powerlessness and alienation is not just re-occurring in Death Of A Salesman. Individual powerlessness is a very common theme in modernism. Many other modern poets and writers show this same theme in their work. E.E. Cummings is a great example of a modern poet who shows the theme of individual powerlessness and alienation.Miller does a wonderful job in showing the theme of individual powerlessness and alienation that Willy goes through in Death Of A Salesman.Death of a Salesman (1951 film)Willy has a very hard life, which leads him to do several stupid acts. Willy is faced with so mu ch grief that he attempts to commit suicide several times by crashing his car. To some extent Willy is not the one responsible for all the bad things that have happened to him throughout his life. Society has rejected Willy and his old fashioned thinking. Society, at this point has evolved so quickly that Willy has not been able to catch up. So in a way, society is the one responsible for alienating Willy. He has not been able to recover from this new change in the world. Willy is seen as a loser, a no-body, someone who has not accomplished anything in his life. Willy's last action of powerlessness was his suicide.E.E. Cummings, along side of Arthur Miller, both wrote modern literature. Both these authors showed... Modernism A good example of Modernism is a short story called I Stand Here Ironing by Tillie Olsen. This story not only portrays gender roles but also family roles. Here the narrator is a mother giving the reader a glimpse into her life, choices she made as a mother, and being a single parent. Through her defense of her situation, she exposes to the reader the underlying insecurities that riddle her mind about her mothering. The tale opens with the narrator explaining the pain she feels when she is reminded of her past and the choices she made. The main character reflects on how the situation may or may not have affected her child Emily. As she suggests, although it is years later, she still does not have time for her children. The mother feels all her children after Emily have had it better. With that said, I shall try to explore the question. What is the difference from then and now? As a young mother, the narrator expresses how she wanted to be the best mother, the right mother for her child Emily. She admits that she was a first time mother ...with all the rigidity of first motherhood... She reads books to educate her self and she believes the experts and what makes the best kind of mother. Tillie Olsen writes about how the character, through physical sacrifice, nursed her child. The story raises our awareness of gender and family roles by the comments of the narrator. We become aware of the constraints we place upon ourselves to fit in with what the majority believes each role in a family should be. The character confesses that she had to parent alone, a nineteen-year-old single parent, and sarcastically quotes a note her husband left for her ...he could no longer endure. Tillie Olsen leaves us, the reader with the sense that the character in the story now feels more of a failure. Because of the thinking of her time, she should be married. It is unfortunate that her h...

Swiss Army Knife for Writers

Swiss Army Knife for Writers Swiss Army Knife for Writers Swiss Army Knife for Writers By Maeve Maddox Until now, the only Thesaurus on my shelves was Rogets, and it was gathering dust because I quit using it years ago. I found it more useful to look up a word in a regular dictionary and see what synonyms were offered. Not ideal, but it gave me more options than Rogets. Now, however, Ive found a reference that is a thesaurus and then some: Oxford American Writers Thesaurus. 2nd edition. Compiled by Chrstine A. Lindberg. The title says it all. Its a writers tool that, for practical versatility, compares to a campers Swiss Army Knife. The main section contains about a thousand pages of entries. Unlike Roget, the OAWT gives the word in context before offering synonyms. Do you ever have a word on the tip of your tongue, but you cannot think of it? You cant even remember what letter it begins with, but youd know it if you saw it? Theres a section for that. In the Word Finder section words are arranged in categories: animals, architecture, food, music, etc. Then there are sections for Archaic Words and Literary Words. Maybe you want to remind yourself what a dangling modifier is, or review how to punctuate titles. Go no further than the Language Guide, nearly 50 pages of clearly presented rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation, plus tips for avoiding common errors. And, wait, as they say on the infomercials, theres more! Scattered among the entries in the main section are boxes containing helpful and entertaining notes on usage and connotation. Theres so much good stuff in this reference book that Ill probably want to tell you more in a future post. For now, a comparison of one entry in the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus with the same word in Roget will explain some of my enthusiasm.
